Professor Malcolm Hollis

   
Malcolm Hollis is active in private practice whilst maintaining his personal interest in research and education. He has been professor of building pathology at the University of Reading since 1988. He specialises in advising a wide range of government departments and public and private companies, including high street retailers and industrialists, upon their property interests as well as preparing forensic reports upon survey claims and dilapidation matters.

Specialisms include

•  the identification and recording of defects in building construction, particularly the investigation and interpretation of cracking in buildings, leak tracing and remedy.

•  the inspection and identification of risk of defects in the future of new and existing buildings

•  the interpretation of the implication of the condition of existing buildings

•  building dispute resolution either through ADR or expert evidence. (He first gave evidence in Court in 1971)

•  the diagnosis of the cause of failure in existing buildings

•  the interpretation of liability in respect of the responsibilities of the parties to a lease upon both landlord and tenant

•  litigation in connection with the duty and responsibilities of professional representatives in the construction industry, and the advice given to allied bodies.

•  The communication of inspection and interpretation skills to undergraduates, post graduates, professional bodies and interest groups.

He has given evidence in over 60 matters within Chancery, the High Court, Crown Courts, and in both civil and criminal actions in England, Scotland, Wales, Guernsey, Holland, and Belgium. He has inspected an eclectic collection of buildings, including cathedrals and royal palaces as well as a wide range of commercial and residential property.

He is an experienced mediator and independent expert

 

Professional experience

Malcolm Hollis has been a Chartered Surveyor for over 30 years. He has been a partner or director of professional surveying practices for more than 25 years. For three years he was the Director of Professional Services for Nationwide.

University

Malcolm Hollis was appointed professor of Building Pathology at the University of Reading in 1988. He is, or has been, an external examiner to more than eight Universities and currently has responsibilities in the United Kingdom, Malaysia and Hong Kong. He has a part-time responsibility for Undergraduate and Masters courses at the University of Reading.

 

Writing

He has written eight books. The amended 4 th edition of ‘Surveying Buildings' was published in 2003 and ‘Pocket Surveying Buildings' 2002. ‘‘An Introduction to Dilapidations' was published in 2003 and Surveying for Dilapidations' is due for publication in 2004.

In the past 5 years Malcolm Hollis has had over 30 articles published in professional journals upon issues relating to surveying standards, defects in buildings, dilapidations and party walls disputes.

 

Appointments

Malcolm Hollis was a member of the Building Surveyors Divisional Council, and is a member of two working parties within the RICS. He is a Freeman of the City of London (1983), a trustee of Upkeep, Upkeep Building Museum and BPL Settled Estates.

He is Surveyor to the Fabric to the Worshipful Company of Skinners

He is managing editor of the Journal of Building Appraisal and is on the editorial board of Structural Surveyor and The Journal of Building Surveying (Hong Kong)
